Ready, set, July.
July has been an instrumental month for the Nature park with one of our biggest projects being finalised, the anchoring system!
1. Anchoring system
Some very exciting news for the Nature Park as we finalised one of our biggest projects so far in July- an anchorage system that marks a move towards sustainable nautical tourism! Lastovo is fast becoming a hot spot for sailors crossing the Adriatic.
This has put increasing pressure on our coastal eco systems. A main issue of nautical tourism has been the degradation of our Posidonia seagrass meadows, which make up an important part of the ecosystem. Anchoring can often pull up this grass. Anchors can also spread alien fauna picked up along the travels.
60 bouys will be implemented around Lastovo Island to ensure environmentally friendly anchoring.
2. Trail run
This month we got our running shoes on for the second Dalmatian running trail race on Lastovo island. The run took participants on a journey through Lastovo villages cobbled streets, past our old churches and olive tree fields ad through vineyards.
A number of locals participated, including one of our rangers and one of the youngest racers, both of whom took away a medal!
The finish line was at Mihalja bay where we all enjoyed some well deserved beer and a swim. We also celebrated with some traditional acapella singing and dancing, and a DJ.
The race is a great way to encourage eco tourism on the island and we look forward to the next one in 2019!
3. Beach clean ups
The month of July also saw a big push towards beach clean ups as we tackle plastic accumulation on Lastovo and surrounding islands.
Rangers, volunteers and locals join together in weekly beach clean ups.
4. Lastovo product fair
The Park ran its first market for local products of the island this month. The aim is to create support for local communities and encourage sustainable tourism.
Visitors were able to get a taste for domestic products, as well as support the work of the Cancer league through donations raised from cakes.
The Ladesta (local women's acapella group), Fumari (local male acapella singing) and the traditional Lastovo dance group (tradition dancing and sword dancing groups) kept us entertained for the night. A great way to show case the traditions of Lastovo for visitors to the island.
