Lastovo Island tour: Part 1

Lastovo is situated in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, 14 km south of neighbouring island of Korcula. It belongs to the outer group of southern Dalmatian islands and is Croatia's most remote inhabited island of Lastovo.

The Nature Park of the Lastovo Islands includes 46 islands, islets, cliffs and ridges, covering a total area of 53 km2 and 143 km2 of the sea surface. It is surrounded by the stone light houses of Sušac, Tajan, Glavat and Struga.

Recently I joined rangers on a monitoring trip around the islets and islands, to check on bird populations as well as the general conditions of the environment. It was a unique experience to visit some extremely remote and untouched lands. Join us as we take a photo tour to discover some of Nature Park Lastovo Islands's beauty and learn a little more about some of its hidden .

Sušac

Sušac is a small rocky island, 24 Kms away from the west coast of Lastovo Island. Rain is extremely rare on the island, giving it its name 'Sušac' which translates to dry island' in English.

The island used to be home to 200 people and two churches still remain as a reminder of the community that once thrived. The church of St.Nicholas was built in the 12th century and the church of St.Mary dates back to the 15th century.

In present day there are only three inhabitants of the island, one Shepard, Goran, and two light house keepers who alternate each month.

Lighthouse of Sušac

In 1879, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria ordered for a lighthouse to be built on top of the island's highest cliff. The lighthouse is still in use today.

Bijelac

Bijelac islet is directly translated to "White". The island is an amazing diving spot, placing in Europes top 10 best diving locations. You can get a glimpse of starfish, marine gold fish, oysters and lobsters.

An underwater tunnel acts as a passage through the island where you can see majestically shaped rock formations. There is also an underwater cave where starfish and coral adore the rocks surfaces.

Close to Mrčara is the island of Prežba, an inhabited island connected to Lastovo island by a bridge at the village of Pasadur.

There is a light house located on the south side of the island that can be seen from the Bay of Ubli.

Prežba was used as a strategic military base for the Yugoslav People's Army. Military ship tunnels can still be found on the island.
